Community Involvement

At Community West Credit Union, we strive to help each of our more than 26,000 members across Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, and Ottawa Counties achieve better financial well-being. At the same time, we are committed to members supporting the communities across West Michigan, where we serve our members.

Why Community is Important to Us

Community is part of our name and part of our DNA. We’ve served West Michigan for over 50 years, helping members grow their savings, increase their financial literacy, and thrive in everything they do. Additionally, we’re member-owned and we know that our members will make the best decisions for the community and the people they live with. Community West Credit Union has made a commitment to stand by our members through every stage of life, from their first savings account through retirement and beyond.

Many of our team members make contributions of their time, talent, and treasure to worthy causes. They assist with fundraising efforts, volunteer at area schools, serve on community boards, help at local events, and more. Together, we support several charitable organizations, including:

  • Kids Food Basket
  • Relay for Life
  • Service Clubs
  • DARE Program
  • YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
  • Youth Sports Leagues

Vern Hyde Scholarship

Community West Credit Union understands the value of higher education and how it helps prepare young people to serve their communities, as well as the difficulties many students face in addressing the high costs of tuition and other related expenses. To encourage young adults to pursue their educational goals, CWCU awards the Vern Hyde Scholarship to four area students* each year. Two awards are granted to high school seniors entering college for the first time during the fall semester, a third award is offered to a high school senior attending a trade program after graduation, and a fourth award is offered to a returning college student.

The scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, volunteer efforts, and community involvement. Scholarship funds may be used to offset the cost of tuition or textbooks, and all eligible students are encouraged to apply. *To be eligible, applicants must be a member in good standing for 12 months at the time of scholarship disbursement, approximately July 1.
